About

Hi, I'm Jorge.

I work across game development, from shaping ideas and player experiences to building the systems, mechanics, plugins, and tools that bring them to life.

Dragon Refuge is where that work lives. Projects I take on with other developers, and games I make on my own.

Outside the code, I draw. I'm a pixel artist, and every sprite of the pig around this site is mine, pixel by pixel. A few of them hide easter eggs. Keep an eye on him.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter look at how I got here. The short version: I've always liked taking things apart to understand how they work.

How I got here

Chapter 1

Games came first

I started coding in 2017, at fifteen, and games were the reason from the start. I didn't expect school math to come in so handy, but games made it click. Vectors and Euclidean distance make much more sense when you can see them at work on the screen.

Chapter 2

The projects I kept

The first thing I ever programmed was a battle system inspired by Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku for the Game Boy Advance. It's bad the way first projects always are, and I still keep it. Plenty of smaller things followed, but the second project I remember is a Bomberman clone, and that one surprises me: the gameplay holds up to this day, even if I'd rewrite every line of the code. I keep that one too.

Chapter 3

Enter the dragon

Dragon Refuge was born in 2021, when I joined a group of developers making free, open-source plugins for RPG Maker MZ. Somewhere in there I adopted the dragon nickname, and later the studio name. The reason? It sounds cool, and I like Dragon Ball. That's the whole story.

Chapter 4

Open for business

The freelance work came first: custom systems, bug fixes, and development tools. As the projects grew, so did the work. In 2023, Dragon Refuge went from a cool name to a full-fledged studio. Today, it's where all of that comes together: original plugins, games built with other developers, and new ideas taking shape.
